In her 40s Lili found herself in the difficult situation that occurs in many people's lives. Dealing with aging family members, raising kids, managing her career, her marriage, her busy husband, and being involved in all of the activities for her daughter and stepsons that she could fit in. Suddenly, she got a call that her beloved Aunt, who lived many states away, was not well. Faced with managing her Aunt’s care from afar in between in-person visits, Lili spoke to many professional people about how to manage and handle everything in her aunt’s life until she got better. Eventually, Lili found her way and then was also faced with her aging parents as well. My name is Beth Hoffeditz. I am a retired 911 Operator originally from Illinois. My husband and I moved down here almost 4 years ago and brought my 90 year old mother with us. We had 2 and a half wonderful years here with her until she passed last November. In my grief, I was searching for a way to memorialize her and keep her close to me. I used to do a lot of stained glass and had recently discovered fused glass. As a tribute to my beautiful momma, I took a very small, minuscule amount of her ashes and began fusing them into these little glass hearts. I have found them to be very comforting, and it gives me something tangible to hold when I want to feel close to her.
The day she left us in November of 2022, I was standing outside in the driveway as she was taken away. In the light of a magnificent Southwest Florida sunset, a Monarch butterfly fluttered past me. At that moment, I knew her mom had been transformed and had gotten her wings. Shortly after that day, I decided to take my love for my mom, the ocean, and the sun to the next level by turning glass into wearable art and soon after, Manasota Monarch Designs, LLC was born. Our logo featuring a butterfly floating freely above ocean waves with a sunset sky background is a loving tribute to the loss of a beautiful soul and the inspiration she continues to provide. In addition to sand, we take special orders for fusing ashes of loved ones or pets into personalized pieces. I personally wear one every day and it gives me great comfort to reach up and hold this little heart, knowing it contains her ashes, and that she is with me wherever I go. |

Born on the west side of Buffalo, NY, my mom is first generation American Sicilian, and my dad is second generation American Irish. Contrary to a typical Sicilian baby, I was born with pale skin and red hair. We lived on the west side of Buffalo until I was 8 years old. My grandfather’s house was a typical Buffalo flat over a flat, 2 story, with a cottage in the rear. My parents lived in that cottage from when they were married for 6 years. The common back yard did serve as a play area for me and 7 cousins. I started to write short stories in middle school, and I hid them in my dresser drawer. Once, in 6th grade, we had a visitor, a lady who had toured Africa. After her lecture about the beauty of her tour, our assignment was to write something about it. I composed a poem. It was 1960, and my teacher went bonkers over the beauty of my poem. She sent it to the local newspaper “man-about-town” column, and it was published. “I’d like to tour Africa and see a native tribe; Climb on Table Mountain, way up in the sky. I’d see elephants, rhinos, and all the other hides, Visit Victoria Falls and and see the brink, so wide. Oh, how I’d like to tour Africa just to see the tall giraffes, monkeys swinging in the trees a tribesman on a raft. Wouldn’t you like to visit Africa and see all these things? To walk through the rain forest and hear the bongos ring? - Maureen Ann Milligan 1960 During high school and nursing school I worked on the school newspapers and year books, editing, and writing copy. I always kept a journal, then they were called diaries, and after 10 years of professional nursing, while in a marriage to a PhD candidate I decided I wanted to go back to school for a bachelor’s degree. A broad academic degree, and not a nursing degree. Our involvement in graduate students’ life led me to understand just how much there was in the world to know, outside of Buffalo, New York, and an associate degree in nursing. That was around the mid-1970s after I moved to Houston, Texas. I started undergraduate work when I was about 30 years old. I signed up for a creative writing course and met the person who would tell me I was a gifted writer and end up being a dear friend and mentor for the rest of her life, over 20 + years. My life with the PhD guy took me to Europe, and especially Paris, where the corporation he worked for headquarters was located. We also traveled extensively around the US by train. I was writing novels by now, but when he asked for a divorce, all that stopped. Ten years later, I was back on the horse, so to speak, and writing poems and short stories. I was in a graduate program and submitted a poem to their literary magazine. Texas has an all-state collegiate competition for literary magazines, and my poem was awarded 2nd place for best in State, 1998. I was back in Buffalo, NY, in 2006. And by 2015, realized that the adjustment from 36 years in Texas back home was earth shaking. I read an article in the December Buffalo News about how people committed to an activity daily for a year and posted it on social media. That gave me an idea. I would write a blog/novel in 2016, one day at a time for 366 (it was a leap year) days. And I did. That blog/novel is the skeleton of the book My Uncle Owes Me a Favor. I haven’t paused writing since. I have a book of poetry in the works as well as a handwritten first draft of my next novel, as well as sketches of events for a sequel to “Uncle . . . As my age advances, I am clearly the writer I’ve always wanted to be. It isn’t just a passion (much overuses phrase) it’s breathing. |
